But it just takes one second to ruin your eyeglasses, which comes with the hassle and expense of having to replace them (not to mention not being able to see for the time it takes for them to be replaced). Read on for some tips for taking care of your eyeglasses!

Caring For Your Eyeglasses

You might be given special instructions for the care of your glasses, but here are some general rules:

• Never use paper products (such as a paper towel or toilet paper) or part of your shirt to clean your glasses. There may be something that is abrasive on these that scratches your lenses. And, don’t use products that aren’t specifically made to clean eyeglasses, because they can do more harm than good. Some glass cleaners, for example, contain ammonia, which can strip any coating off of eyeglasses. Use eyeglass cleaner, wipes, or water and a soft, microfiber cloth.

• If your lens has popped out or if a screw is loose or your glasses need some kind of adjustment, take them back to where you got them from for help. If you try to fix it yourself you may damage the frames.

• Pay attention to where you leave your glasses (so you can find them when you need them, for one thing!). You don’t want to leave them on the edge of a shelf where they can easily fall from and get stepped on, and you want to make sure children can’t reach them.

Sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish between problems with your glasses and changes in your vision. Visit your eye doctor once a year for an exam if you wear glasses or whenever you start to notice any problems.

If you do need new glasses, you can depend on the Optical Shop at North Suburban Eye Associates for help. contact lensesWhether you have worn contacts for years or you just started wearing them recently, you may be tired of the evening routine of taking them out before bed, only to have to reinsert them in the morning. What could the harm be in simply leaving them in all night?

Should you take your contacts out before going to sleep?

It can sometimes be a pain (especially when you have had a long day and you just want to get into bed), but it is actually quite important for the health of your eyes that you take out your contacts before going to sleep, and it is important to do this each and every night.

When your eyes are closed all night, they get less exposure to the oxygen and moisture that helps to clean bacteria off of eyes throughout the day. At night, the bacteria has a chance to build up on your eyes, and having your contacts in only makes this worse. It can irritate the eyes and can even lead to an eye infection. Even if you have been prescribed contacts that are approved for overnight use, it is still a good idea to take them out at bedtime.

If you accidentally sleep in your contacts one night – which everyone has done a time or two! – take them out as soon as you wake up. Leave them out for the day and watch for any signs of infection, such as red, irritated eyes, excessive watering, discharge, or blurred vision. If you think you might have an infection, you should call your doctor right away. Untreated infections can cause damage to your eyes and eventually can even cause blindness.

Taking out contacts every night can be annoying – it’s just one more thing to do before you get to finally relax, call it a day, and go to sleep. However, it is worth it to take a few minutes to remove them (and thoroughly clean them, of course!). Take good care of your eyes every day, and don’t forget to schedule your annual eye exam at North Suburban Eye Associates in Massachusetts! Call (781) 245-5200 today!

When patients in Massachusetts are considering prescription sunglasses, they may wonder if they are worth the extra money. It’s another set of lenses and glasses frames, but it can be extremely beneficial to the individual. Here are just a few of the benefits of using prescription sunglasses:

  • Crisp and clear vision in the outdoors. If you spend any amount of time outside and want to have crystal clear vision, prescription sunglasses are the way to go. Prescription sunglasses are custom-made for the patient, and can provide better vision than contacts with traditional glasses.
  • No more glare. Glare can be problematic for anyone who is spending time in the great outdoors. With polarized prescription lenses, patients can neutralize the glare that can be problematic.
  • Customization. Patients who order prescription sunglasses can have the tint and color chosen specifically for their unique preferences. Colors may include anything from gray to rose to yellow, depending on how you want to see the world!
  • UV protection. We always think of wearing sunblock to protect our skin from UV rays, but what about our eyes? Prescription sunglasses can block 100% of the sun’s UV rays, protecting your eyes from the damaging effects of UV ray damage, including macular degeneration, cataracts, and even cancer.
  • Choices of lenses. When a pair of prescription sunglasses is fabricated to a patient’s specifications, they have options when it comes to the type of materials and treatments used on the glasses. This includes scratch-resistant lenses, polycarbonate lenses, polarized lenses, and photochromatic lenses.
  • Convenience. Instead of wearing your regular prescription glasses and another pair of sunglasses over them, patients can enjoy the convenience of wearing one set of glasses when spending time outside. Patients can avoid the cumbersome and unsightly special lenses used over traditional glasses and enjoy a fashionably pair of sunglasses instead!
