Couple in late 40s enjoying time in nature without needing to wear glasses. They are in loveClear lens exchange (CLE), also known as refractive lens exchange, is gaining attention as a proactive vision correction option among people who want long-lasting results. At North Suburban Eye, our skilled ophthalmologists perform CLE using advanced surgical techniques and premium intraocular lenses (IOLs) to help you reduce your dependence on glasses or contacts — while also preventing future cataract development. With extensive experience in refractive surgery, our team offers trusted guidance and personalized care to support optimal vision at every stage of life.

What Is Clear Lens Exchange?

Clear lens exchange involves removing the eye’s natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens. This procedure is almost identical to cataract surgery, but it is performed before cataracts develop. It’s typically recommended for patients over 40 who are beginning to notice presbyopia (age-related loss of near vision) or for those with moderate to severe farsightedness.

Unlike LASIK or PRK, which reshape the cornea, CLE targets the lens itself, making it a preferred solution for patients with certain prescriptions or age-related changes.

Vision Correction That Lasts a Lifetime

One of the most appealing benefits of CLE is its permanence. Once the natural lens is replaced, the eye will no longer develop cataracts. That means patients who undergo CLE today can avoid needing cataract surgery in the future.

Patients also enjoy:

  • Improved visual clarity at one or more distances, depending on lens selection
  • Stable results that don’t shift with age like natural lenses often do
  • Fewer prescription changes and reduced dependence on reading glasses or bifocals
  • Freedom from glasses or contacts, especially when using advanced multifocal or extended depth of focus lenses

A Proactive Choice for Aging Eyes

For people in their 40s to 60s, CLE offers a strategic advantage: treat vision problems now while preventing others from developing later. It’s particularly valuable if you are not a good candidate for laser eye surgery or want a long-term solution without waiting for cataracts to form.

Explore Vision Correction with an Experienced Team

Choosing CLE is an investment in your future visual health. The ophthalmologists at North Suburban Eye in Wakefield, Winchester, and Waltham, MA are highly trained in lens-based surgery and guide patients through every step, from lens selection to recovery. To find out whether clear lens exchange is the right option for your eyes, schedule a consultation by contacting us at 781-245-5200. Long-lasting visual clarity may be closer than you think.

Older man with improved eye health in MassachusettsElevated eye pressure (intraocular pressure – IOP) is a risk factor for glaucoma. It is a serious condition that can lead to vision loss if left untreated.

Although different medical treatments are available, adopting some ways to lower eye pressure naturally can help you a lot. However, you need to work with an eye doctor if you want long-term control.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

What you eat can have a significant impact on your overall eye health. A diet high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can aid in maintaining normal ocular pressure. Foods strong in vitamins C, E, and A, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, are very advantageous to your vision.

Green leafy vegetables, carrots, citrus fruits, and fish like salmon and tuna are excellent additions to your diet. Avoid excessive caffeine, as it may temporarily increase eye pressure.

Exercise Regularly

Moderate, consistent exercise can improve blood flow throughout your body. Walking, swimming, or cycling can help lower eye pressure. However, it’s important to avoid exercises that put strain on your eyes, such as lifting heavy weights or doing head-down yoga poses.

Always consult your eye doctor before starting any new exercise regimen, especially if you’ve been diagnosed with glaucoma.

Stay Hydrated (But Don’t Overdo It)

Drinking enough water is necessary for overall health. However, fluid consumption way matters when it comes to eye pressure. Instead of drinking large amounts of water at once, try to sip small amounts throughout the day.

Proper hydration helps maintain normal blood circulation and fluid balance in the eyes.

Limit Screen Time and Rest Your Eyes

Prolonged screen time for extended periods can lead to eye strain. It can exacerbate eye pressure. Take frequent breaks using the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It helps reduce eye strain and may aid in maintaining healthy eye pressure.

Book Your Glaucoma Treatment in Massachusetts

While lifestyle changes can contribute to lowering eye pressure naturally, they should be viewed as complementary to medical treatments. However, always consult with your doctor before making any major lifestyle changes.

Call us at 781-245-5200  and book an appointment with North Suburban Eye Associates, P.C. We have offices in Wakefield, Winchester, and Waltham.

Understanding UV Exposure and Eye Health

Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun affect our skin, but many people overlook the cumulative impact they can have on eye health. Long-term exposure to UV rays can lead to various eye conditions, ranging from temporary discomfort to serious, vision-threatening conditions. While wearing UV-protective clothing or sunscreen is routine for skin protection, eye protection is just as crucial.

One immediate concern with prolonged UV exposure is photokeratitis, essentially a sunburn of the eye. It causes symptoms such as redness, tearing, sensitivity to light, and a gritty feeling. Although photokeratitis is typically temporary, frequent UV exposure can increase the risk of serious conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and even certain forms of eye cancer. Cataracts, for instance, are a leading cause of blindness globally, and they develop faster with prolonged UV exposure.

Eye Health Over Time: Prevention and Protection

Regular, long-term UV exposure can also contribute to macular degeneration, which impairs central vision and diminishes the ability to see fine details. Since eye cells do not regenerate quickly, damage from UV exposure is often cumulative, building over a lifetime. Wearing UV-blocking sunglasses is one of the simplest ways to protect your eyes, as they block both UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, wide-brimmed hats add another layer of protection by limiting the amount of UV light reaching your eyes.

For patients of all ages, a proactive approach to eye health can make a significant difference. Annual eye exams play an important role in monitoring eye health and catching early signs of UV-related damage. Our team at North Suburban Eye Associates is dedicated to helping patients achieve long-term eye health and offers comprehensive eye care to assess and address any UV-related concerns. To learn more about our services, visit our eye care services page.

eye twitchingYou may have experienced the eye twitch. Your eye may flutter involuntarily or may completely shut for a moment. Though this may cause distress and can be an annoyance, the twitch is typically benign.

Sometimes; however, an eye twitch could be indicative of a serious underlying health issue. With a variety of reasons your eye may twitch, it is best to visit an eye doctor to determine if there is a serious cause present. Let’s take a look at some causes of eye twitching and when it’s time to visit a doctor.

What Causes Your Eye to Twitch

Though the exact physiological mechanism for the eye twitch is yet undiscovered, there are a variety of causes for your eye to twitch, ranging from benign to serious.

Stress

Stress, both emotional and physiological, such as from a lack of sleep or over-exertion, can lead to your eyelids twitching.

Caffeine Consumption

Caffeine, the excitatory drug, has been shown to cause eye twitching in those who consume too much.

Eye Strain

Reading, using the computer, or looking at a screen have all been shown to sometimes cause eye twitching.

Infection

In some instances, an infection of the eye or surrounding areas can lead to inflammation that causes eye twitching.

Neurological Issues and Disorders

The more serious causes of eye twitching can be due to neurological disorders, such as Bell’s Palsy and Multiple Sclerosis.

When Should You Head to a Doctor?

If your eye twitching does not go away on its own and it does not respond to decreasing caffeine intake, increasing sleep, reducing stress, or taking eye drops if you have dry eyes, then you should visit an eye doctor.

Your eye doctor can help determine the cause of your eye twitching and determine if further testing is needed to see if the cause is any one of the serious neurological disorders.

You need someone experienced and trusted to help determine the cause of your eye twitching. At North Suburban Eye Associates, we are proud to offer comprehensive eye care, from glasses to cataract surgery and everything in between, to the Wakefield, Waltham, and Winchester areas.

The Benefits of Fish Oil

Fish oil supplements provide omega-3 fatty acids, which are known as “essential fatty acids.” Our bodies need these acids to function properly, yet our bodies can’t make them – we have to get them from foods and supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids can help to prevent heart disease, cancer, dementia, and rheumatoid arthritis. And they also do a lot for eye health. They can lower the risk of:

  • Glaucoma. Essential fatty acids such as omega-3 can help to drain the fluid inside the eye. This lowers the risk of glaucoma, which can occur when pressure in the eye is too high.
  • Macular degeneration. This condition causes you to gradually lose your vision. Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids may reduce your risk of developing macular degeneration.
  • Dry eye. Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of getting dry eye syndrome, and they can also help to treat dry eyes.
  • Vision problems in babies. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in breast milk, but they are also added to some kinds of formula. Infants who get enough omega-3s have better vision than infants who don’t.

Foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids include walnuts, tofu, soybeans, flaxseed oil, and, of course, fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and white tuna. However, it can be difficult to get essential fatty acids from foods (especially if you aren’t a fan of fish), and that’s where fish oil supplements come in. Before starting any supplement, though, you should speak with your doctor to make sure they won’t interfere with any other medication you are taking.

Fish oil supplements can do wonders for your eye health, and so can seeing your eye doctor for regular exams or when you are having a problem with your eyes or your vision. Guy dripping eye dropsEyedrops can help with several different kinds of eye problems, but there are some things you should know about using them. If you have tried eyedrops before and they didn’t seem to do much good, it may be because you are using the wrong kind, or maybe you are even using them the wrong way!

Which Eyedrops Should You Use?

You can get over-the-counter eyedrops to take care of problems such as dryness, redness, and itching. However, if you have a persistent problem with your eyes, you should see your eye doctor. He or she might recommend prescription-strength eye drops, or there may be another, underlying issue that needs to be treated. Here are some other things you should know about eyedrops:

  • Choose the right kind. It does matter what kind of eyedrops you get. For instance, if you are looking for help for dry eyes, you should opt for lubricating eyedrops (also known as “artificial tears”), but avoid decongestant eyedrops. These are for reducing red eyes, but they can make eyes more dry. If you have contacts, you should make sure to get eyedrops that can be used while you’re wearing them.
  • Put them in correctly. You probably have your own way of putting eyedrops in that works best for you (or your eye doctor can help with some tips), but there are a few rules everyone should follow: remove contacts before using eyedrops (unless they are made to be used while wearing contacts); wash your hands before putting in eyedrops; and don’t touch the tip of the eyedrop bottle so that the eyedrops don’t get contaminated.
  • Read the label. You might think that the more eyedrops you use, the better, but this isn’t true. Follow instructions on the label to find out how many drops to put in the eye, and also pay attention to the expiration date on the bottle and throw out eyedrops that you’ve had past this date.

Sometimes eyedrops just aren’t enough to help with an eye problem you have! It may be time to make an appointment at North Suburban Eye Associates, with offices in Waltham, Winchester, and Wakefield, Massachusetts. Call (781) 245-5200 for an appointment today!

iStock 925183292 300x200 1When you’ve been wearing eyeglasses for years, it’s easy to take them for granted – you probably don’t take care of them like you did when you first got them. But it just takes one second to ruin your eyeglasses, which comes with the hassle and expense of having to replace them (not to mention not being able to see for the time it takes for them to be replaced). Read on for some tips for taking care of your eyeglasses!

Caring For Your Eyeglasses

You might be given special instructions for the care of your glasses, but here are some general rules:

• Never use paper products (such as a paper towel or toilet paper) or part of your shirt to clean your glasses. There may be something that is abrasive on these that scratches your lenses. And, don’t use products that aren’t specifically made to clean eyeglasses, because they can do more harm than good. Some glass cleaners, for example, contain ammonia, which can strip any coating off of eyeglasses. Use eyeglass cleaner, wipes, or water and a soft, microfiber cloth.

• If your lens has popped out or if a screw is loose or your glasses need some kind of adjustment, take them back to where you got them from for help. If you try to fix it yourself you may damage the frames.

• Pay attention to where you leave your glasses (so you can find them when you need them, for one thing!). You don’t want to leave them on the edge of a shelf where they can easily fall from and get stepped on, and you want to make sure children can’t reach them.

Sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish between problems with your glasses and changes in your vision. Visit your eye doctor once a year for an exam if you wear glasses or whenever you start to notice any problems.

If you do need new glasses, you can depend on the Optical Shop at North Suburban Eye Associates for help. Or, maybe you’ve decided it’s time for contacts or a laser eye procedure so that you don’t have to mess with glasses at all! Call North Suburban Eye Associates in Massachusetts for an appointment. Call (781) 245-5200 today!

Happy young couple enjoying a solitary beach backridingYou probably know the importance of wearing sunscreen and protecting your skin from the summer sun, and you probably know how important it is to drink a lot of water when you’re outside in the sun to protect your health. But it is just as important to protect your eyes! Read on for some reminders about taking care of your eyes this summer!

Wear your sunglasses

UV light from the sun can do serious damage to your eyes. You should wear sunglasses even on cloudy days, as UV light can still make its way through the clouds. Also, keep in mind that sunglasses aren’t just for summer – the sun may not feel as strong in the fall and winter months, but it can still do damage.

Make sure you get sunglasses that offer 100% protection against UV rays. If you work outside in the sun all day long, you might want to invest in some wraparound sunglasses, and if you drive long distances during the day you might want to get polarized sunglasses to reduce glare. Larger sunglasses will protect not only your eyes but the skin around your eyes, which can become damaged and start to develop wrinkles and fine lines after years of sun exposure. And, get some sunglasses for your children to wear, too, because exposure to the sun at a young age can mean problems with eyes later in life.

Wear a hat

The sun can cause so much damage that it’s not a bad idea to protect yourself from it as much as possible. A wide-brimmed hat, in addition to sunglasses, can help to keep the sun out of your eyes.

Opt for contact lenses

Did you know that some contact lenses offer UV protection? Ask your doctor about these kinds of contacts for even more protection.

Avoid the sun when it’s at its worst

The sun is at its highest and harshest from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. During these hours it is best to stay indoors, as it is the most dangerous time for your eyes, skin, and general health.

Take care of your eyes this summer (and your family’s eyes as well!), with an appointment at North Suburban Eye Associates in Massachusetts. Call (781) 245-5200 today!

Asian young beautiful woman eating salad with happy mood smileYou probably have an idea of what to eat on those days when you need extra energy, or, if you are a body builder, what to eat to build up muscle. You probably also have an idea of what not to eat, such as those times when you are trying to lose a few pounds. Eating the right foods can do wonders for your health – and there are some foods you can make sure to eat to keep your eyes healthy, too!

Foods for healthy eyes

Try to add in some of these foods to your meals every day:

1. Foods that are high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, grapefruit, tangerines), sweet potatoes, peaches, strawberries, red bell peppers, and tomatoes. Vitamin C protects the eyes from the sun and environmental damage. Eating these foods raw will be most beneficial.

2. Leafy green veggies, which have lots of lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants that help to protect the eyes from damage and lower the risk of eye disease. It isn’t just leafy veggies (such as spinach and romaine lettuce) that have these antioxidants, though – you can also get them from eggs, peas, and broccoli.

3. Carrots are famously thought of as being good for eyes – and they are. They are high in vitamin A, which helps you see better at night, keeps the retina healthy, and can help prevent dry eyes. Other fruits and vegetables that are brightly colored are also high in vitamin A.

4. Foods that are high in vitamin E, such as almonds, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, and avocados, help to keep cells healthy. Vitamin E helps to prevent cataracts and can also help to keep age-related macular degeneration from becoming worse.

You can eat cake and cookies all day long, if you want. You are an adult, after all! But there are so many foods to choose from that are both delicious and good for you and for your eyes – you are sure to find some foods you like from the list above. If you just aren’t seeing as well as you used to, contact North Suburban Eye Associates in Massachusetts. Call (781) 245-5200 today!

contact lensesWhether you have worn contacts for years or you just started wearing them recently, you may be tired of the evening routine of taking them out before bed, only to have to reinsert them in the morning. What could the harm be in simply leaving them in all night?

Should you take your contacts out before going to sleep?

It can sometimes be a pain (especially when you have had a long day and you just want to get into bed), but it is actually quite important for the health of your eyes that you take out your contacts before going to sleep, and it is important to do this each and every night.

When your eyes are closed all night, they get less exposure to the oxygen and moisture that helps to clean bacteria off of eyes throughout the day. At night, the bacteria has a chance to build up on your eyes, and having your contacts in only makes this worse. It can irritate the eyes and can even lead to an eye infection. Even if you have been prescribed contacts that are approved for overnight use, it is still a good idea to take them out at bedtime.

If you accidentally sleep in your contacts one night – which everyone has done a time or two! – take them out as soon as you wake up. Leave them out for the day and watch for any signs of infection, such as red, irritated eyes, excessive watering, discharge, or blurred vision. If you think you might have an infection, you should call your doctor right away. Untreated infections can cause damage to your eyes and eventually can even cause blindness.

Taking out contacts every night can be annoying – it’s just one more thing to do before you get to finally relax, call it a day, and go to sleep. However, it is worth it to take a few minutes to remove them (and thoroughly clean them, of course!). Take good care of your eyes every day, and don’t forget to schedule your annual eye exam at North Suburban Eye Associates in Massachusetts! Call (781) 245-5200 today!
